What would you do if a real letter from Paul showed up with your name on it?
You would panic a little. You would wonder if he sees the stuff you hide under the spiritual rug. We all know how to look “fine.” We also know when we are coasting. Paul would not ignore it. He loved people too much to play along.
Why the Church should stay united. Corinth was talented and chaotic. A lot like us here in California. They had skills. They also had drama. People chose teams. “I follow Paul.” “I follow Apollos.” One group even said “I follow Christ” and acted like they owned the trademark. Almost like picking a political party. It looked spiritual. It was not. It was pride with a Bible verse taped on top.
Paul cuts through everything with one line. “I planted. Apollos watered. But God has been making it grow.” NIV. Translation. Calm down. None of us are the point. God does the real work. Your favorite preacher did not die for you. Jesus did. Paul brings them back to the center because unity is not optional. It is a sign you grew up.
What it means to be God’s temple together? Paul says the Spirit lives in us. All of us. Which means church is not a club with preferred seating. It is a living temple. The way we treat each other matters. The way we handle pride, gossip, or strong opinions matters. You are not a customer. You are a child of God who belongs to a family, even the relatives who annoy you but show up anyway.
When we pick people who think like us. It feels safe, but it also keeps us small. Paul tells a church full of long time believers they are still babies. Not because of age. Because of their attitudes. Many believers mistake comfort for conviction. That is how tribes form. That is how unity cracks.
What growing up looks like. Growing up means choosing humility over preference. It means reminding yourself the Church is about who we follow, not what we like. If Jesus is not the center, the whole thing tilts. We need fewer critics and more people who repair things before they break.
Action steps
Try one today.
• Reach out to someone you avoid.
• Let go of one opinion you treat like scripture.
• Honor a believer who drives you a little crazy.
• Replace one complaint with one prayer for the church.
• Practice a five minute gratitude reset every Sunday.
A united church surprises people. A divided world expects drama. When believers forgive fast, love deep, and leave ego at the door, people see Jesus. When we split into camps, they see another club with nicer music.
Begin today
Ask God for a humble heart. Take one step toward someone, not away. The Spirit lives in us. Let the world see a church that follows Jesus and not the latest personality they prefer.
